After Adam Smith wrote “The Wealth of Nations” in 1776, Economics became an official social science for researching people’s economical behavior, and there have now been numerous scholars researching and teaching Economics around the world for more than two hundred years. During their educational careers, these scholars need appropriate tools, and the price of Economics textbooks has become one of the most important factors in judging the quality and value for money of these resources. For this reason, we collected data from Economics textbooks in Chinese from 1951 to 2006, and built a long term differential pricing model to analyze the effects of the textbook characteristics compared to the price. In this paper, we compare the empirical results of two functional transformations. When using semi-log transformation, we found that chapters, pages, page width and depth, and the year of publication affect the price significantly. When using Box-Cox transformation, we found the same results, but this is also effectively raised the value of the R-squire.
