This study exploits a problem faced by a video rental shop when jointly determining the optimal stocking level of a new tape and the optimal length of time of a new tape exhibition. Some videotapes will be sold as secondhand tapes for salvage at the end of new tape rental period. Besides, a retailer that rents tapes to customers for a pre-specified rental duration. To meet the time-varying rental demand and return process, we first propose a basic model that is intended to analyze the impact of the stocking level and new tape rental period on the retailer’s profit. We next extend our basic model to the case in which a retailer implements a revenue–sharing (R-S) contract with a supplier. In the extended model, we illustrate how revenue sharing influences new tape rental period and stocking level. Moreover, we demonstrate how it alters the performance of a supply chain and investigate whether the R-S contract can result in larger profits for all firms or not. In this study we adopt an algorithm that we develop to decide the optimal initial purchasing quantity, the new tape rental period and the coefficient of R-S contract to maximize the supply chain’s profit under the basic model and the extended model. We also provide numerical analysis to investigate the impact of the R-S contract on channel’s profit and study whether the R-S contract can achieve the win-win conditions or not. Furthermore, we will show that R-S contract can optimize the channel’s profit and bring win-win situations to the players in the industry. Finally, we study the effects of the particular parameters and conduct the sensitivity analysis. We hope the experimental result can generate interesting managerial insights regarding the relative importance of the parameters.
